The European Manifesto outlines how sustainable buildings are key to Europe’s prosperous future.

The European Manifesto for a sustainable built environment highlights the pivotal role buildings play in Europe’s transition to a prosperous and equitable future. The World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) Europe Regional Network calls on EU policymakers to embrace sustainable building practices to address economic, environmental, and social challenges.

With 36% of EU CO2 emissions coming from buildings, the manifesto urges deep renovation of existing structures to eliminate both operational and embodied carbon emissions. It also calls for a circular economy, advocating for the reuse of resources to reduce waste. Additionally, sustainable buildings should improve public health, conserve water, and enhance resilience to climate impacts.

Policymakers are encouraged to prioritize regulations, incentives, and financial frameworks to drive this transition. Among the key recommendations are mandatory energy performance standards and the phase-out of fossil fuel heating by 2030. The manifesto also emphasizes the need for equal access to sustainable housing and employment, ensuring a just transition for all citizens.

Implementing these policies, the manifesto argues, would align Europe with its climate goals while creating sustainable jobs and enhancing the quality of life. This comprehensive approach, supported by the European Commission’s initiatives, positions sustainable buildings at the heart of Europe’s future prosperity.
