This toolkit outlines financial strategies to decarbonize airports and reach net-zero emissions by 2050.

Airports play a crucial role in aviation’s goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Although they contribute a relatively small percentage of the industry’s emissions, they are key enablers in the sector’s green transition. This toolkit provides guidance on how airports can access financing for decarbonization projects, such as implementing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) infrastructure and other emissions-reducing initiatives.

Traditional funding sources, such as government loans and bonds, are increasingly supplemented by innovative financial instruments like green bonds and sustainability-linked loans. These alternatives can help airports secure funding for environmentally focused projects while setting measurable decarbonization targets. The toolkit also highlights the role of airports in influencing other stakeholders, like airlines and ground-handling services, to adopt greener practices.

Airports’ emissions are categorized into three scopes. While Scope 1 and 2 emissions, related to direct airport activities and energy use, are easier to manage, Scope 3 emissions—those from airlines and passenger vehicles—are more challenging. However, airports can still reduce Scope 3 emissions through initiatives like promoting SAF use and electric vehicle infrastructure. By 2050, the industry will need to invest around $5 trillion to meet its decarbonization goals.
