Analysis of European decarbonization strategies to reduce the environmental impact of the construction sector.

BuildingLife is a European initiative aiming to reduce carbon emissions in the construction sector, addressing both operational and embodied emissions throughout the entire lifecycle of buildings. Nearly €60 million has been mobilized to fund innovations in carbon reduction, establishing a roadmap that can be adopted by other regions towards climate neutrality.

National roadmaps developed in countries like France, Germany, Spain, and others demonstrate strong alignment with European policies such as the Green Deal and the Renovation Wave, although greater governmental commitment is still needed to meet climate targets. The involvement of multiple stakeholders, including local governments and private sector entities, has been key to advancing these strategies.

Significant challenges include the lack of uniform data and the need for greater transparency in carbon emission measurement and reporting. Engaging all industry players, from developers to financial institutions and local governments, is essential for the widespread and effective adoption of sustainable construction practices.
