Gensler’s 2024 Design Forecast highlights trends in sustainability, AI, urban design, and immersive experiences

Outlines key global design trends that address the rapid transformation of cities, workplaces, and industries. As we face challenges like climate change, inclusivity, and economic shifts, design plays a pivotal role in offering solutions that foster innovation, sustainability, and human connection.

The report identifies eight major trends shaping the future of design in 2024. These include the rise of immersive experiences, the growing trend of converting underutilized office buildings into residential spaces, and the increasing importance of sustainable design. AI is seen as a key tool for accelerating innovation and problem-solving, while cities are focusing on creating equitable, accessible 20-minute neighborhoods. Additionally, the design of multigenerational communities and mixed-use lifestyle districts is expected to foster connectivity and revive urban areas impacted by recent crises.

Gensler also explores the transformative power of design in real-world examples, such as rebuilding war-torn cities like Mariupol and Irpin in Ukraine. The firm is leveraging its expertise to create spaces that promote healing, resilience, and hope, while addressing the broader challenges of modern urban living, such as mobility and aging infrastructure.

Finally, Gensler’s internal transformation, with the introduction of new practice areas in response to the evolving needs of the design industry. Emphasizing the importance of leadership, sustainability, and inclusivity, Gensler is preparing for the future by embracing generative AI, lowering the carbon footprint of projects, and expanding its global reach.
