Global economy hotel brand ibis, in collaboration with Globetrender, has unveiled a comprehensive report exploring the travel motivations of Gen Z and Millennials for 2025. Based on insights from 9,000 respondents across eight markets, the study highlights the growing importance of travel experiences that drive personal growth, cultural connection, and community.
A key finding reveals that 58% of travellers believe “experiences are better than stuff”, marking a profound shift towards prioritizing meaningful activities such as concerts, local traditions, or destinations seen on screen. Social media plays a crucial role in these decisions, with 17% of Gen Z/Y travellers citing TikTok as their main source of inspiration, compared to 27% for Instagram.
The report outlines ten emerging travel trends, including the popularity of workations (12% of respondents) and visits to sporting events and stadiums (13%). A notable 33% of Gen Z/Y travellers also emphasize the importance of feeling a sense of belonging in their chosen destinations.
Jenny Southan, CEO of Globetrender, underscores the influence of Gen Z and Millennials as cultural tastemakers who can drive economic shifts through their travel choices. These generations, she notes, intertwine travel with work-life balance, social media, and global events.
Jean-Yves Minet, global brand president at ibis, emphasizes the brand’s commitment to purposeful travel. He highlights that ibis offers convenience, comfort, and affordability for travellers who focus on immersive and inspiring experiences. Whether attending events, exploring local culture, or sharing moments with loved ones, ibis supports guests’ intent to “Go get it” – aligning with their new campaign.
